first_imgHow dedicated are you to your job?Shelia Corley Britton was working at the Skyland Shell gas station Sunday morning when two men entered the store and tried to take three cases of beer.Now she’s fighting for her life.Michael Burrell, 52, is still on the run in the robbery, but 32-year-old Dewan Hampton is already behind bars facing robbery charges.“She is a good person,” said fellow employee Antoinette Scarbrough. “Very good worker, reliable.”Police said Britton went from doing her job to being at DCH Regional Medical Center in critical condition when Burrell entered the gas station and stole three cases of beer.Britton took off after Burrell and his vehicle, and that’s when tragedy struck: She was caught with part of her body in the car when Burrell and Hampton were driving away, and wound up being dragged by the car through the parking lot.“Usually what we’ll tell people is just to be a good witness,” said Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Brad Mason. “Don’t put yourself in a position to get hurt. I understand why she did what she did, but obviously we don’t want anyone getting hurt or injured — especially seriously injured like this.”Police said her injuries are life-threatening, and her family released the following statement.The family of Shelia Corley Britton expresses their deep appreciation for all the words of comfort, prayers and love shown to our sister. Shelia is very critical and the road to recovery will be long. To know Shelia and her tremendous work ethic and love for her customers at Shell and her day job at Tuscaloosa Chevrolet, we were not surprised at her effort to stop the theft. We remain hopeful at this time, we pray for those who committed the crime and we are grateful for the outpouring of love.Hampton has been charged with first-degree robbery and is in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
